I started training Jiu-jitsu about 5 years ago with the goal of getting in shape. At the time I was pushing past 260lbs, barely getting off couch, pains everywhere, trouble sleeping, just a whole host of health issues. I’ve tried going to the gym, walking, jogging, weight-lifting, however none of those things really stuck. There’s nothing wrong with them all it’s just I could never keep the momentum going, and any small issue at work or in life would cause me to stop for months at a time.
I decided on a whim to try a local Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym, not really expecting too much, but here I am 4 years later still going at it. I’ve lost 80 lbs, gained quite a bit of muscle, almost all of my health issues are just gone. These physical changes have been great, even life changing, but they don’t compare to the mental changes I have undergone. From this martial art I’ve learned how to defend myself, which has given me an incredible amount of confidence in every day life. From participating in the sports aspects of Jiu-jitsu I’ve become much more adventurous and am now constantly seeking new and exciting events and activities that I would never dare to do before (rock climbing, surfing, sky-diving, hang-gliding). All the friends I’ve made with similar attitudes have really changed my overall lifestyle. I’m hardly ever on the couch, I’m much more outgoing and engaged in life. Anxiety and mental fatigue are just gone.
I believe the secret is to find an activity you just love to do and it’s your reward every day you get to do it, rather then just another item on your list of must-do’s. I love my time training and cherish every moment because it’s fun and exciting every time. Even if it’s not Jiu-jitsu, although I highly recommend it, I would definitely try to find that one activity that doesn’t feel like more work."
